I’m so excited to share this new work. At 10.25 x 15.25 cm (4 x 6 in), it’s the smallest painting I’ve done to date, as well as the first time I’ve attempted oil on paper!
Zullyta is part of a series of works based on photographs from my childhood. I was drawn to this image because of how much personality comes through. I love my big hair. It reminded me of the freedom that comes with being a child and not knowing/caring about notions of looking “tidy” – something that as I got older I discovered could be used against me as a brown person with curly hair. I also felt a lot of joy rediscovering what I was interested in as a kid. One of my favorite moments in the painting is the Minnie Mouse chupón.
The title of the work comes from a family nickname. In Spanish, we often express endearment towards someone/something by adding an -ito or -ita at the end. Technically, it’s making the subject smaller – “little Zully,” but mainly, it’s a way to express affection. Both meanings felt accurate, as this is a portrait of me at a young age, and an image that makes me feel deeply cared for.
Working at this scale was challenging because there was less room for error. Every mark had to be precise, especially in the face. The slightest misplacement could take away the likeness, so I had to work slowly and keep a steady hand.
Zullyta is a small painting, but one that holds a big place in my heart. Thanks for following along!
